Now this is my idea of comfort food. My mom used to make me this whenever I was sick. This with a little bit of yogurt and some lime pickle on the side will cure any sickness.
Ingredients:
2 tbsp whole moong
2 tbsp split moong w/ skin
1/2 cup rice
1/4 tsp chili pwd (can sub w/ 2 dried chilies)
1/4 tsp turmeric pwd
Whole spices (1/2 tsp mustard seeds, 2 cinnamon sticks)
Pinch of hing
1 tsp salt
1 tbsp oil
Preparation:
Soak both moong dals together in water for at least one hour.
Cook:
Heat oil on medium heat in pressure cooker.
Add mustard seeds, cinnamon sticks and hing (also dried chilies if using these).
Once popped, add moong dals and water until submerged.
Add turmeric and chili pwds and boil until dal is soft (10-15 mins).
Add rice, 1 cup water and salt. Put lid on pressure cooker and cook for 2 whistles.
Turn heat down to low for 10 mins and then turn it off.
Once cooled and all steam is released, open lid.
If water remains, turn on high flame and let it evaporate.
